When it comes to eating out with a vegetarian friend, given a choice, I more than often choose South Indian cuisine. In one of these expeditions, I discovered this roadside dosa stall in Viman Nagar that has about 30 varieties of dosa.
This man parks his modest cart in front of Axis Bank ATM, Dutta Mandir Chowk every evening at around 6:00 PM and sells everything by 9:00 – 9:30 PM. He creates the most delectable dosas by expertly blending a range of flavours. His ingredients are pre-prepared from his home and ready to be topped on the batter.
What will you find on/near his cart?
- Three tavas all fired up, cooking different kinds of dosas, simultaneously and quickly
- Dosa ingredients and accompaniments neatly arranged around the tava
- Lots of customers standing around, waiting patiently for their ordered fare
What is so special about his cart?
Apart from the normal varieties of dosas and uttapams, he has assortments like Chinese and American chopsuey, cheese, Chinese noodles, paneer chilli and pav bhaji as topping/filling of the dosa. The toppings’ ingredients like the vegetables, sauces, cheese and spices blend seamlessly with the taste of the dosa. They serve the dosa with tangy green chutney and coconut chutney. These fusion food items make great evening snacks.
This guy’s dosa making skills and swiftness will mesmerise you – very deftly he dips his ladle into the batter and makes a thin, circular base that he adorns with cheese and toppings. The value-add at this place is that it is highly pocket-friendly; their dosas range from INR 20 to 120. No wonder, this is my go-to place when I am broke and famished.
Do try one of his dosas when you go to Viman Nagar.
